A simply outstanding bottling from one of the most well respected distilleries in Scotland. Glenfarclas has been family owned for five generations, and they make a point of creating their whisky “the right way”, without colouring or fancy marketing. Each expression in the Family Collector series celebrates a member of owning Grant family. This particular whisky plays homage to George Grant, who nearly brought the distillery to ruin during the “Pattinson”s Crisis’, before later securing its future through shrewd business and scrupulous accounting. The whisky is packaged in a handsome black leather case, featuring George Grant’s profile.
This whisky weighs in at only 41.1%, yet it remains a cask strength whisky, just one that has lost considerable strength as it is extremely old. Often these low-strength cask-strength whiskies have an extraordinarily intense flavour, a result of long periods in the cask, without dilution of product before bottling. This whisky is no exception. Glenfarclas 50 Year Old is a luxurious, decadent whisky, replete with spiced leathery sherried notes. The finish is long and sweet, lingering with highlights of butterscotch and spiced biscuits.
Only 937 bottles of this whisky have been released, all released from a handful of ancient ex-Oloroso sherry casks. A unique opportunity to own and taste a piece of history from one of Scotland’s very finest distilleries.
