A fascinating release from Irish distillers, Glendalough.
This single malt whiskey has been aged for seven years, including an ‘exceptionally long’ finish in Japanese Mizunara oak.
Famed for being one of the most flavoursome (and difficult to work with) oaks in the spirits industry, Mizunara is rarely seen in Irish whiskies. The wood is extremely expensive, as there are strict limits on the amount of timber that can be felled each year.
The end result is a dram that offers notes of treacle tart, sandalwood, chocolate oranges, vanilla, date puddings, dried fruits, fresh pastry, sweet malt, oak, liquorice, almonds, honey and cream.
Bottled at 46% ABV for a touch more depth and body, this is one of Glendalough’s most interesting releases to date.
