Domaine le Basque is located in the small town of Lannemaignan in the Gers region of south-west France. For many years, Michel Lamothe has managed the distillery, keep a strict adherence to traditional production of Armagnac. This is demonstrated by the distillery’s continued use of old fashioned continuous alembics and refusal to either colour or chill filter their spirit. Mostly, however, it is shown by their continued use of Folle Blanche grape. This grape, whilst perfect for the production of Armagnac, has an extremely low yield and is very difficult to grow. This has led to many distillers and wine-makers choosing different grapes, yet these do not have quite the same oily, spicy quality that Folle Blanche possesses. The quality of these grapes is perfectly on show with this marvelous vintage release from Domaine le Basque – an intense, fruity affair, with dark notes of chocolate, coffee, dried fruit and toasted spices. An excellent bottle that rewards patience with a multitude of succulent flavours.
