You might be familiar with spiced rum, but this spiced gin offers something a little different.
Darnley’s View is produced by the whisky blenders and bottlers extraordinaire, Wemyss, who poached gin distilling master Charles Maxwell to over see this side-project. With this much spirits know-how behind them, Darnley’s could scarcely fail to be stupendous gin!
This particular offering is something very different to the wealth of (equally delicious) citrus or juniper-forward gins on the market. Instead, this bottling chooses to emphasize the spicier elements of the spirit.
Darnley’s View Spiced is made with an array of dense, earthy spices, namely: cloves, cumin, cassia, nutmeg, angelica root, coriander seed, cinnamon and grains of paradise. These are, of course, accompanied by juniper, and a good dose of ginger. The result is a peppery, warm, Christmassy gin, with some lovely chocolaty flavours and an almost middle eastern character. Setting the undertone throughout is a sharp, piney juniper note.
The flavours enjoy a small boost by being bottled at slightly higher 42.7% ABV.
This is a truly magnificent gin, well crafted all the way through, from the choice of the ingredients and their sourcing, to the smart presentation of the bottle. Great work from Wemyss & Co.
