The first straight rye whiskey to be made in Pennsylvania for over 25 years, Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey is a landmark bottling not only for the company but for the state as a whole.
Pennsylvania was, at one time, the number one distilling region in America, particularly known for producing rye whiskey. Unfortunately, changing palates and changing economic conditions following prohibition meant the style fell out of favour, and nearly disappeared for good. Thankfully its back, and so are delicious bottlings like this one.
Made with a locally sourced grain mashbill of 80% rye, 15% barley malt and 5% rye malt, this is a traditional PA rye whiskey. The spirit is produced at the Grundy Mill distillery in Bristol, Pennsylvania, and has been distilled in a 500-gallon old fashioned pot still.
This dram has been aged for a minimum of 4 years in charred new American oak casks, resulting in a whiskey that offers notes of chopped herbs, intense cinnamon spice, apples, a little tropical fruit, dark rye bread, cracked black pepper, peppermint, vanilla, charred oak, grassy malt, caramel and subtle brown sugar.
Bottled a toasty 47.5% ABV, this is a toasty, warming dram.
