An impressive dram from the Dad’s Hat rye company.
Dad’s Hat are one of the brands that have led the revival of distillation in Pennsylvania, which was the premier distilling state in America, prior to prohibition and the rise of Kentucky Bourbon. They produce their spirit at the Grundy Mill Distillery in Bristol, PA.
This whiskey is made with a mashbill of 80% rye, 15% malted barley and 5% malted rye. This recipe is notable for its lack of corn, which makes it all the more spicy and textured.
For this expression, Dad’s Hat have taken their classic Pennsylvania Rye – matured for 6 months in charred new American oak casks – and finished it in Port wine cask for an additional 3 months. The spice of rye and the sweetness of Port are something of a match made in heaven, and this dram does not disappoint.
Dad's Hat Port Finish offers up notes of dried fruits, Christmas cake, caramel, creamy oak, jammy fruits, cracked black pepper, plums, cedarwood, cinnamon, dark chocolate, nutmeg, cardamom, some minerality, a little mint, rye bread and brown sugar.
Bottled at a warming 47% ABV, this is well balanced and warming rye.
