Here at Fine Drams we are huge fans of all things that Rhum Clément does. Whilst the Martinique distillery is famous for its superb quality of Rhum Agricole, this is something a little different: a “Créole Shrubb”. Créole is the term given to the meeting of Caribbean and French cultures, as found in Clément’s own history. Whilst “Shrubb” in this case refers not to the modern common usage of vinegared syrup cocktails, but to its original 17th century meaning a fruit liqueur. Indeed, this is a wonderful orange liqueur, made of Rhum Agricole, orange peel, sugar cane and “Créole spices”. Most other orange liqueurs use a neutral grain spirit as their base, so the Agricole here adds a real touch of class, with a precise, grassy and peppery flavour holding up the whole liqueur. For those unfamiliar with the Shrubb – think Cointreau, but a little sweeter, more flavoursome and complex. This is an excellent addition to rum-based Tiki cocktails such as the Mai Tai, or older classics such as the Sidecar. We’ve also had great results sticking a bit in a glass of champagne. Truly excellent stuff, perhaps the only orange liqueur you’ll ever need…
