Known as the grandfather of gin, Genever is a traditional Dutch spirit that combines juniper and other botanicals with malt wine.
By The Dutch have produced an excellent rendition of this spirit, made to a traditional 1942 recipe. This spirit has been distilled at the Herman Jansen Distillery, using a base mash-bill of corn, malted barley and rye. This wash was initially double distilled in a copper pot still, before the addition of juniper berries and a third distillation in a column still.
Part of this spirit is then taken and mixed with hopes, cloves, anise, liquorice and other botanicals, before being distilled once more. Another part is distilled again without botanicals, and a third part is re-distilled with even more juniper berries.
All four parts are then blended together in a secret proportion, producing a delicious, complex Genever. This bottling serves up notes of spicy malt, vanilla, anise, bittersweet juniper, orange peel and coriander.
An excellent alternative to gin, this spirit can also be enjoyed neat.
