A superb rye whiskey from Vermont based distillers, WhistlePig.
This distillery has quickly established itself as one of the finest producers of rye whiskey anywhere in the world, and this was their oldest bottling when it was first released in 2016.
Made largely with sourced Canadian rye whiskey (WhistlePig has recently begun bottling some of the spirit made from rye that the distillery grows onsite at its farm), this bottling has been finished in toasted virgin-oak barrels grown at WhistlePig’s Vermont home. As the winters are longer and the growing season rather short, Vermont oak is known for being rather tightly grained, which means that its tannins are released more slowly into the spirit.
The result is a fresh and flavoursome rye whisky, with tonnes of bursting sweetness and fiery spice. This dram serves up notes of caramel, toffee, red apples, rye bread, butterscotch, dark chocolate, biscuits, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, nuts, grass, charred oak and slight menthol.
Bottled at 46% ABV, this whisky enjoys a full body.
Top stuff again, from the folk in Vermont.
