One of the best selling liqueurs in the world, Ricard is a pastis made in Marseille, in the south of France.
Flavoured with aniseed and liquorice, Ricard was founded by Paul Ricard in 1932, when the distiller was only 21 years old. Whilst absinthe remained prohibited, pastis became a runaway success.
The recipe for this liqueur remains a secret, though it is known to contain aniseed, fennel, herbs de Provence, and liquorice.
This spirit is best served long, with the addition of plenty of water, at which point it will cloud pleasingly.
Ricard had a long rivalry with its competitor, Pernod, until in 1975, the two companies merged to become drinks giant Pernod Ricard.
