The new batch of the premium Rum bottling from Hackney-based company Pirate’s Grog! This is a 13 year old rum, mixed with a small amount of 8 year old, to give it a youthful vigour. Exquisitely presented, the rum is a super small batch of just two casks. Produced in Honduras by Robert J. van der Weg, the rum is aged on the small Caribbean island of Roatán, which has a considerably piratical history, being a stop-off point for buccaneers as they sheltered from storms and avoided capture. This is currently the only Honduran rum exported to Europe. The well-aged rum offers an extraordinary drinking experience, with the nose serving up aromas of sweet cane, dense oak, dried fruit, chocolate, coffee and overripe bananas. The palate is thick and creamy, with a huge molasses flavour, treacle tart, dried fruits again, dark chocolate, caramel and rich vanilla custard. The finish lingers with lasting flavours of woodspice, toffee and burnt sugar. As this is such a small batch production, drinkers should move fast if they want to try this, it is unlikely to stick around long!
