Patron, with its squat bottle and distinctive cork closure is doubtlessly one of the biggest names in the Tequila world, with a special place in popular culture. This is partly due to the savvy marketing campaign undertaken by the brand (particularly the introduction of individually numbered bottles), but also because the spirit continues to be of a fantastic quality. This reposado is an excellent example of the fine Tequila that Patron produce. Made from 100% blue weber agave grown in Jalisco, using only the “maguey” or heart of the plant, the spirit offers the drinker a real taste of the agave plant. Patron only use agave that has grown to maturity in this red, clay-rich soil for around 7 years. Patron bake their agave hearts in small, traditional brick ovens for up to three days, which ensures even cooking and a better flavour. The agave hearts are then crushed by a two-ton volcanic millstone. The shredded agave mixture is fermented for three days, before the agave beer is distilled in handmade copper stills. This reposado tequila is aged for two months in oak barrels, giving added flavours of vanilla and toffee and a slight colour. As you can see, attention to detail is paramount throughout the Patron production system, with even the bottles and corks being carefully handmade. Each bottle is hand-signed, verifying its quality. Without any doubt this is one of the finest reposado Tequilas in the world, and a great stepping stone between their fantastic blanco and richly flavoured anejo offerings.
