This rum is inspired by the Nāga, a race of semi-divine half man, half serpent, mythical creatures found in Hinduism and Buddhism.
The spirit has been produced in Indonesia with local sugar cane, and is distilled in the northern reaches of the Island of Java. Fermentation is slow, and uses Javanese rice yeast. Distillation occurs in a combination of pot stills and column stills.
The rum is aged initially in casks made from the local Jatti wood, giving it a unique flavour of its home nation, before being transferred to the industry standard former Bourbon barrels. Finally, this Naga is aged in cherrywood casks, earning the spirit’s Triple Cask status, and imbuing the rum with a fruity, tannic flavour.
Drinkers should expect notes of floral white rice, molasses, vanilla, oak, wine tannins, red grapes, tropical fruit, cherry, burnt wood, toffee, bananas, cumin, cinnamon, cloves and red pepper flakes.
A fascinating rum, unlike most on the market. This is well worth trying for any seasoned rum fan.
