First created in 1944 by Angelo Molinari, who was inspired by anise flavoured spirits that have been enjoyed since the 19th century.
This bottling continues to be produced by the Molinari family at their distillery, which is located in Colfelice, south of Rome.
The liqueur is produced using an essential oil extracted from star anise by steam distillation. A little sugar and additional flavours are added for a rounder profile.
Molinari Sambuca Extra serves up notes of menthol, clean aniseed, liquorice, citrus peel and grass, with a slightly flinty finish.
Traditionally, this Sambuca is served after dinner with the addition of three coffee beans (‘con la mosca’ – literally, ‘with the fly’) which are meant to bring the drinker good luck.
As a sign of the superiority of this Sambuca in a crowded marketplace, Molinari features the word “Extra” on the label; they are the only company who are legally allowed to do so.
Meravigliosa sapore ottimo la mosca non deve mancare.
