The top of the MacNair’s range, this is a delightful, well-aged dram.
Produced by Billy Walker, of Glendronach and GlenAllachie fame, this blended malt takes its inspiration from Harvey McNair, a Victorian distiller and travelling trader who worked at the GlenAllachie distillery, and created an early forerunner to the Lum Reek. The idea struck him when he was enjoying a glass in a bothy with a blocked chimney, meaning the room filled with smoke, the effect on the whisky was highly pleasant, so he decided to create a smoky whisky of his own (a depiction of this scene is found on the label). At the time a common toast was “Long may your lum reek”, meaning “Long may your chimney smoke”, giving rise to this dram’s name.
This whisky is produced using malts from Speyside, Islay and the GlenAllachie distillery itself. It is aged in a warehouse at the GlenAllachie distillery, in a mixture of virgin oak, red wine and Oloroso sherry casks, for a minimum of 21 years. It is a small batch bottling.
Such long maturation has produced a whisky of extraordinary depth and character.
This dram provides notes of tempered peat, with rich vanilla oak, dried fruits soaked in Cognac, marzipan, sherry, plums, charred oak, chocolate, cigar smoke, pecan tart and citrus rind.
The whisky is bottled at 48% ABV, and without chill filtration or colouration, ensuring a full mouthfeel and assertive palate.
