Perhaps the whisky distillery with the greatest reputation for producing high-quality sherried malt whiskies. This is no exception, indeed, it stands apart as being one of few whiskies that can truly be considered icons of the industry. An annual release, this is the 1996 vintage, bottled in 2014, having been aged in a full 18 years in Sherry oak casks from the finest Bodegas in Jerez, Spain. This gives the whisky its distinctive rich, rounded sweetness, for which Macallan has become famous the world over. The nose is rich with sherry aromas, notes of plums, cherries and dried fruit, replete with stewed sultanas, raisins and dark toasted oak. The palate is chewy and dense, with warming oak flavours, dark chocolate, a gingery zing, vanilla custard and woodspice. Sherried notes build on the back of the palate, with an intense prune flavour. The finish is everlasting, with rich woodspice, charred oak and toffee. An outstanding bottling from Macallan.
