One of Scotch whisky’s most iconic distilleries, Macallan is beloved by everyone from James Bond to Michael Martin, the former Speaker of the House of Commons. This said, this particularly bottling, which marries Macallan’s classic Sherry cask maturation with former Bourbon barrel matured whiskies, caused a bit of a stir when it first hit the shelves. Some drinkers felt this was a diluting of the distillery’s house-style. Yet, the dust appears to have settled, and this whisky is now viewed as a different style of Macallan, but still an excellent dram that reflects the wonderful fruity, spicy character of the old distillery. Aged for 10 years, this is a lovely level of maturity for this whisky, ensuring an exquisite balance. The nose delivers crisp, toasted cereal aromas, with a delightful sugar note and creamy vanilla wafting off the glass. The palate brings more floral, nutty, sherried flavour, with classic Macallan woodspice, some sugared citrus peel and vanilla custard. The finish returns to the cereal note of the nose, with dusty, thick oak leaving a lasting bittersweet taste. A reinvented classic that delivers serious value for money!
