A truly spectacular blend from Diageo and Johnnie Walker, which pays homage to some of the Scotch whisky world’s dearly departed distilleries.
The distilleries used are legendary Islay distillery Port Ellen, alongside two closed grain distilleries Carsebridge and Caledonian (which closed in 1983 and 1988 respectively). It is these lost distilleries that give the whisky its spectral name “Ghost & Rare”. Making up the rest of the blend are incredibly rare whiskies from other distilleries in the Diageo stable: Cragganmore, Blair Athol, Dailuaine, Oban and Mortlach.
The whisky blending was personally overseen by Master Blender Dr. Jim Beveridge. The result is a rich, luscious and waxy whisky, which features an elegant peat, gentle malt and rich tropical fruit flavours, with touches of peach, biscuit, pineapple and mango. A little oaky dried fruit and citrus rind linger, besides some sea spray.
Bottled at a strength of 43.8% ABV, this is a creamy, subtle dram.
Truly a whisky of a rare quality, and doubtless one of the finest Johnnie Walker blends ever made.
Beyond reach of many. 50 ml bottle should be available.
