A fascinating release from the Isle of Raasay distillery.
This single cask, single malt Scotch whisky has been matured in a single Chinkapin virgin oak cask, which has been treated to a fresh char. Chinkapin is a kind of oak native central and eastern North America.
The whisky forms part of the Na Sia Single Cask Series, a group of whiskies from different cask varieties released every two years to illustrate how the young distillery’s spirit is progressing. This particular spirit was distilled in 2019, and matured until June 2022 with a final age of a little over three years.
When tasting this whisky, the char of the cask is immediately apparent, with a rich caramel and burnt brown sugar note, accompanied by flavours of youthful malt, bright apples and pears, a little smoke, vanilla, cinnamon, intensely flavoursome oak and baked nuts.
Bottled at a powerful 61.9% ABV, this an assertive and full bodied whisky. An intriguing experiment from Raasay.
