A superb, funky, overproof rum from the legendary Hampden Estate distillery.
Despite there having been a great many, extremely well received independently bottled Hampden Estate rums, this is the first aged rum to be bottled and released by the distillery themselves (alongside a standard proof edition).
This offering is a blend of pot still rums, aged for around 8 years in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica. The heat and humidity of the Caribbean is said to accelerate the aging process, with the distillery estimating that 8 years in Trelawny works out to about 25 years of maturation in Europe – though this is not an absolute certainty.
The result is a remarkably rich and complex spirit, which serves up notes of dark oak and mahogany, bitter cocoa, fudgy chocolate, caramel, black tea with milk, allspice, cinnamon, dried tropical fruits, bananas, pineapples funky molasses, ginger, beeswax, yeasty dunder and a slightly briny vegetal note.
Not as funky as some of their younger spirit, this is still an expressive and complex Jamaican rum.
Bottled at 60% ABV, this is a generous, powerful and satisfying rum.
