One of our very favourite bottlings at Fine Drams, from the excellent Glendronach distillery.
This whisky takes its name from the collective noun for rooks, a group of which live in the trees close to the distillery – so unrelated to any political institution!
Glendronach style themselves as the “sherry cask connoisseurs” and so it proves with this offering, which has been matured in both nutty Oloroso and sweet Pedro Ximénez casks.
The result is an incredibly rich and decadent whisky. 21 years has given this dram a terrific maturity. The whisky serves up wave after wave of dense, luxurious sherried notes, with thick raspberry jam, maraschino cherries, vanilla oak, toffee, treacle, chocolate, Christmas spices, espresso and ripe bananas. The finish is long and tannic.
The flavours of this whisky benefit considerably from the fact that it is bottled at 48% ABV, and without colouration.
An incredible whisky, one of the very finest sherried expressions on the market today.
