A really interesting gin bottling. Elephant Gin was founded by Robin Gerlach, after he made a trip to Africa and witnessed, with horror, the destruction of the habitats of African elephants, and the poaching of the animals for ivory. On this trip he met photographer Tessa Wienker, and the pair decided to create a business that would help the elephants.
This gin is made with a 100% rye base, and is distilled in Germany in a 400 litre Arnold Holstein still. The bottling uses the 14 botanicals as the standard Elephant Gin offering, but in larger quantities than the original. These botanicals include Buchu, Devil’s Claw, Lion’s Tail and wormwood from Africa, alongside Chinese ginger, German apples, pine needles, Mexican pimento berries, Ukrainian and Polish elderflowers, juniper and sweet Spanish orange.
Following distillation, the gin was aged in a mixture of new and refill wood for a year, producing this amber coloured spirit.
The final result is a complex and full bodied gin, which offers flavours of forest berries, lemons, juniper, nutmeg, exotic herb, bitter wormwood, gingery zing, subtle oaky spice, and bright orange juice.
Bottled at 52% ABV, this is a powerful gin that rewards slow sipping. The gin is produced in batches of 1000 bottles. The bottles themselves are wonderfully presented, with an antique map label, elephant motif and a rustic flask shape.
15% of all profits go to elephant charities such as Space for Elephants.
