A 30 year old Caol Ila bottled by Hunter Laing, as part of their Old & Rare “a platinum collection”. This whisky was distilled in January, 1984, and then laid to rest in a single refill hogshead for 30 long years, until it was bottled in October, 2014. It comes in a very nice, wooden box, and the whisky itself is, of course, presented at cask strength without chillfiltration and artificial colouring.
With really old Islay whiskies, the peatiness often fade, leaving almost nothing of the original distillery character. Luckily, that is not the case here. This 30 year old Caol Ila has managed to retain much of its Islay character, only slightly taming it. Alongside the peatiness, there are delicate, sweet notes of rhubarb compote, and vanilla.
