Inspired by Augustus Bulleit, who was a successful distiller who made a high-rye bourbon from 1830–1960, Thomas E. Bulleit, Jr. was successful in fulfilling his life long dream, when he in 1987 revived the old family bourbon recipe by starting the Bulleit Distilling Company.

Today, Bulleit is distilled by the Four Roses distiller in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. It is still characterized by its high-rye mashbill (at around 28% rye), and is aged for a minimum of 6 years.
