Black Bottle is a classic blended whisky brand, dating all the way back to 1879, when it was launched by a group of Aberdeen tea blenders. It has taken several different forms since then, with the classic black glass bottle being dropped in 1914 (black glass was wholly produced in Germany at the time thus could not be sourced during WW1). In 1990, the formula was reconfigured, to put a greater emphasis on Islay malt whiskies, with their typical peaty qualities. Then again, in 2013, the blend was re-launched, in its original black-glass bottle and with a new “recipe” that was closer to the pre-1990 version. Whilst this less-peaty approach threw some fans off, it presents a better balanced whisky, with wisps of smoke working harmoniously with the fruit and toffee flavours provided by other malt whiskies. A blend of continued quality, and one all whisky fans should try!
