An interesting blend from the venerable old whisky makers, Ballantine’s.
This blend is matured in second fill American oak casks, before it is removed for less than a day (to prevent the cask drying), the cask is then “hard fired” – or heavily charred – with the spirit enjoying a further few months finishing process.
This technique creates an interesting flavour profile, rarely seen in Scotch whisky. The heavy char introduces notes of burnt oak, toast, and barley, with a dense smokey fudge flavour, some orchard fruit notes and a slight pressed flower aroma.
Fascinating stuff, with a wonderful intensity of flavour throughout. Whilst this is delicious neat, inventive bartenders will doubtless have a lot of fun mixing up new cocktails using Ballantine’s Hard Fired.
