A recent addition to Ballantine’s range of whiskies. This offering takes Ballantine’s iconic blend (based around a core of Glentauchers, Glenburgie and Miltonduff malts), and finishes it for a period in “Hard Fired” oak barrels.
For this process, the blended whisky is removed from the casks for no longer than a day, to avoid them drying out. The casks, which are second-fill American white oak barrels, are then heavily charred, producing a thick charcoal crust on the barrel. This aids the filtration of the whisky, but also imparts a delightful, vanilla infused smokiness to the final product.
The whisky that was previously removed from the cask is then placed back inside for a finishing period of several months, giving it an extra layer of complexity and intensity.
A lovely little bottling, that is great value for money bottling in this bigger, one litre size. Makes a superbly smoky Rob Roy.
