A wonderful dark rum produced by the St. Lucia Distillery, one of our favourite Caribbean rum makers here at Fine Drams. Unlike many other distilleries, St. Lucia refuses to add any additional sugar to their rums, which allows the core flavours of the rum to shine through unadulterated. This rum is named in honour of the spirit and St. Lucia’s naval history, after Georges Brydges Rodney, the first Baron Rodney. Rodney Bay in St. Lucia is named after him, as he defeated the French navy near to the spot on several occasions. On the nose, this rum opens with warm aromas of sweet, heavy brown sugar, slow dripping molasses, burnt pineapple and deep oak. A little peppery spice emerges after a while. The palate is supple and smooth, with flavours of rich vanilla, light pepper, a little barrel char, alongside dark, caramelised tropical fruits. A crumbling brown sugar note finishes the palate. The finish is long and delicious, with a drying oaky note, and highlights of bright vanilla. A really lovely rum for sipping straight or over ice. Admiral Rodney Extra Old picked up a Silver Outstanding in the International Wine and Spirits Competition of 2013.
