A miniature of one of the world’s most popular vodka bottlings.
Absolut Blue, the flagship bottling from Swedish distiller Absolut, is made with 100% winter wheat and Swedish well water. The company dates back to 1879, and the vodka recipe itself is over 30 years old.
The all of wheat is taken from the Skåne region in Sweden’s south. Indeed, Absolut accounts for one fifth of the area’s wheat production. The wheat is mashed with added enzymes, which allows the mashing to occur at a lower temperature, better preserving the grain’s flavour. A special propriety yeast is added, creating a sour mash, and fermentation takes between 48-55 hours.
The wash is distilled to 90% ABV before a rectification process in four different column stills, producing a spirit of some 96% ABV. This spirit is nearly entirely neutral, so to add a little more character, Absolut add vodka produced from a special selection of wheat which enjoys a separate wash and distillation process, and sits at a lower strength. The vodka is then reduced to bottling strength with pure Swedish well water, demineralised onsite. Interestingly, the vodka is not filtered, giving it a bit more body and flavour than its rivals.
The vodka is pure and clean, with subtle notes of rye spice, wheat sweetness, vanilla and crack black pepper.
An excellent option for any vodka cocktail. The bottle design is based on medicine flasks from the 1700s.
