A special version of Hungary’s national liquor.
This bottling contains Zwack Unicum– a herbal digestif liqueur made with over 40 different herbs and spices in a secret blend. The liqueur was first produced as a medicine back in 1790.
The Riserva addition is notably for being double aged in two extremely different casks. Initial aging occurs in a huge (16,000 liter), and very old cask maintained in the distillery cellars. This barrel has been used to age Unicum for over eighty years. The company claim that this barrel has built up a layer of what they call “black honey” inside, adding flavour to the final product.
For the Riserva, the spirit is then aged again in Tokaji wine casks (another famous Hungarian product), which impart another layer of sweetness and flavour. These casks are stored in a hidden area of the cellar which only the Zwack family have access to.
The result is an digestif that is unmistakably Unicum, with all the expected and belove herbal, bittersweet and rooty notes, accompanied by a sweet, grapey flavour from the Tokaji wine casks.
Best served over ice.
