A very interesting gin which is produced in Iceland!
VOR (Icelandic for ‘spring’) Distillery began in 2009, and is based just outside of the capital city of Reykjavik.
This gin begins with 100% Icelandic barley from the managing family’s own farm. This barley is organic, and benefits from Iceland’s cool climate and volcanic soil.
They first create a new make spirit in their pot stills (converted from old dairy tanks), which they then redistill this spirit with botanicals, some of which are foraged locally and all of which are organic. The botanicals that are imported come from Scandinavia, to retain the gin’s Nordic feel.
In all the distillery uses, rhubarb, crowberries, thyme, Icelandic moss, kelp, kale, birch leaves, angelica and juniper. The base spirit actually provides lots of the flavour here, as it is not distilled as high in proof as the EU requires. Whilst this means that it legally cannot be called a “gin”, the base spirit is more characterful and flavoursome.
The end result is an earthy and perfectly balanced gin, with a good core of juniper bittersweet character offset by the base spirit’s cereal sweetness.
An exciting, and somewhat maverick, Icelandic gin.
