Produced by Philadelphia Distilling, this is an absinthe which pays homage to the history and drinking culture of New Orleans. This was the first absinthe legally distilled on America’s East Coast.
Vieux Carré takes its name from the French meaning ‘Old Square’, the term applied to New Orleans’s famous French Quarter, where much absinthe was, and continues to be, consumed.
This absinthe uses a high quality grain spirit as its base, which is flavoured with classic absinthe botanicals including genepi, star anise, Melissa, grande wormwood, petite wormwood, fennel and citrus. A double maceration process is used to ensure that the flavours of the botanicals are fully expressed.
The result is a clean and pleasantly herbaceous absinthe, with plenty of bright, verdant flavours, touches of flowers, mint, bittersweet wormwood, hyssop and liquorrice-like fennel and anise.
Bottled at 60% ABV, this is slightly milder than many absinthes on the market, but still packs a punch!
As fate would have it, there is cocktail which shares the same name as this bottling, that is much enhanced by a quick spritz of this spirit.
The spirit is beautifully presented in an old-world style decanter bottling.
