One of the most famous blends of whisky on the market today. Vat 69 takes its name from the blend’s interesting conception. Whisky blender William Sanderson had produced 100 different casks of blended whisky, and got a panel of expert tasters to try and judge each one. Cask (or Vat) 69 was considered to be superior, and thus, a new whisky brand was born. It should be noted that this whisky is not a vatted malt, but rather a blend of 40 different malt and grain whiskies. Traditionally, this whisky has contained a high proportion of Glen Garioch, Royal Lochnagar and North British grain. The whisky has had a high profile in popular culture, featuring prominently in the mini-series Band of Brothers. It was also one of the drams that Ernest Shackleton took with him on his Antarctic Expedition for “medicinal purposes”. The whisky itself is soft and approachable, with notes of orchard fruits, barley wine and wheaty bread. A dram of a reliable quality, it was awarded a silver medal in the 2015 Scotch Whisky Masters.
