A wonderful, over-proof gin from the Netherlands. In the golden age of sail, Holland was one of the world’s great trading nations, bringing spices and botanicals from around the world to their ports. The Dutch were also early pioneers of distilling, creating Genever – the forerunner to gin – and aiding the development of brandy. With this history then, Holland can be considered something like the home of gin (though London has a strong claim to this title too). This bottling pays homage to the nautical history of both the nation and the spirit, being bottled at traditional “Gunpowder proof”. This strength is so named as it is the proof at which gunpowder can be soaked in the spirit, and still ignite: important for ships where the liquor was often stored next to the powder reserves, a situation where low-proof leakage could ruin the gunpowder and leave the ship defenceless. This gin uses an interesting botanical, St. John’s Wort, known to be an efficient anti-depressant, it has a uniquely earthy quality, perfect for adding depth to gins. Other botanicals include: coriander, cardamom, ginger, lemon, orange, angelica, liquorice, laurel and, of course, juniper. This is a powerful yet well balanced gin, rich in citrus, spice bittersweet juniper and earthy flavours. Ideal for a stronger G&T or all manner of gin cocktails.
