A classic German digestif bitter that dates back to 1846.

Underberg is a traditional style of German drink called “Kräuterlikör” – a type of herbal liqueur that was originally created for medicinal reasons. Whilst Underberg is no longer considered a health product, each small bottling of the spirit contains 1.3% herbal extract by weight, and high quantities of the vitamin B1.

The spirit is based upon a closely guarded secret recipe developed by Hubert Underberg-Albrecht in the mid-19th century. The herbs are carefully distilled, with extracts aged for months in Slovenian oak barrels.

The final product delivers an intensely powerful ginger and clove spice note, followed by liquorice, stewed herbs, quinine, aniseed and slight roasted coffee bean.

Underberg is famous for its small 20ml bottle format with brown paper sleeve. Late, great rapper, MF DOOM, was a notable fan of this, most unusual of liqueurs.
