Perhaps overshadowed by that other distillery that ends –vulin, Tamnavulin is a lesser known distillery that has been in and out of business over the last 20 or so years. Indeed, this is the first new distillery release from the distillery since the 1990s. Very little of Tamnavulin’s whisky is bottled as single malt, with the majority being used for Whyte & Mackay’s portfolio of blends (who own the distillery and reopened it in 2007). This whisky has been matured in American white oak barrels before a finishing period in Sherry casks. This aging process produces a lovely balance between the vanilla-heavy notes of American oak, and the fruiter, jammy flavours of the Sherry cask. A deeply chocolaty and creamy dram, this is an interesting and exciting whisky that hints at the huge potential of this distillery. One that single malt lovers will be keen to try, and fantastic value!
