Break the taboo! An old-fashioned absinthe from the Rauter Distillery in Essen, Germany. Rauter have been distilling since 1853, and are one of the oldest companies to be found in Essen.
The forefather of this bottling is a spirit called “Wormwood Taboo”, a German style of absinthe. Wormwood Taboo was banned under the German absinthe ban, which came into effect in 1923. This bottling is a variation on this family recipe.
This bottling contains 2.4mg/kg of thujone, a compound said to be responsible for absinth’s supposed psychoactive effects.
It is made with natural herbs, and some vermouth extract, creating a complex and flavoursome spirit, with a powerful wormwood bitterness. Slightly tannic and drying, with some spice notes.
Bottled at a 73% ABV, this is not for the faint of heart, but is a sophisticated absinthe that rewards patience and ice water with big flavour.
Very popular in Germany.
