Here at Fine Drams there are few things we like more than a good port-finished whisky. This is a great example of the style from the Speyside Distillery, owned by blenders and bottlers Harvey’s of Edinburgh. Speyside’s range has recently been re-launched as “SPEY”, with new slim packaging. This whisky has been aged in former Bourbon barrels, before spending a six month finishing period in tawny port casks. As such, this dram has a wonderful balance between sweet wine and fruit flavours, a bright vanilla oak. The nose is wonderfully aromatic, with fresh plums, currants, cherries, raspberries, vanilla and honey. The palate is thick and flavoursome, with extraordinary fruit notes, and buttery Bourbon character which builds with time. The finish is long and lingering, with delicious fruits, light smoke and woodspice throughout. A great offering from SPEY, really benefitting from being bottled at the higher proof of 46% ABV and without chill filtration!
Brilliant value for money and a very good whiskey
