A revived classic of the Mitchell Family, better known for their stalwart Green and Yellow Spot editions.
The Mitchell family kept a shop on Dublin’s famous Grafton Street, which originally focused on the selling of wines and confectionary. They first began selling whiskey in 1887, with the spirit maturing in barrels in the shop’s cellars.
The whiskies gained their colour-based names from the Mitchell’s method of illustrating the age of their whiskey – with different coloured dots on the label. Red Spot referred to the oldest bottling – 15 years old.
This is a single pot still produced at the famous Midleton distillery, matured in a mixture of American Bourbon casks, Spanish sherry butts and Sicilian Marsala wine casks. The result is a complex dram, with layers of flavour and plenty of fruity goodness.
Red Spot opens with notes of baked fruits and toasted spices, soon followed by sour cherry, nuts, leather, bright, vanilla-rich oak, peppery spice, malt, a touch of chilli, sweet wine and old wood paneling.
The Mitchells have bottled this at 46% ABV, and without chill filtration, ensuring a fully flavoured whiskey with a thick mouthfeel.
A wonderful revival of this previously-lost dram, discontinued 50 years ago.
