One of the historic “Grand Marques” of Champagne production, Pommery is famed for being the first to commercially produce a Brut Champagne in 1874. Prior to this the majority of Champagne wines were heavily dosed with sugar.
The brand was first established by Alexandre Louis Pommery as a wool trading company , but Alexandre’s widow, Louise (known as the formidable Madam Pommery), transformed the concern to wine production, quickly becoming one of the larger and best known houses in the region.
Made with a blend of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from 40 different crus, the Champagne is aged in cellars for a minimum of 36 months.
The result is a flavoursome, dry offering, with notes of mixed herbs, red fruits, almonds, pastry, apples, pears, slight chalk, lemon rind, yeasty lees, bread and a little cashew creaminess. This wine enjoys a lively effervescence, and a slightly creamy, medium body.
Ready to drink now, but can be aged for three or four years.
