A very interesting single malt, produced by Long Island Spirits out of the state of New York. This whisky foregoes the normal whisky mashing process by using an English-style barleywine ale instead. This beer is called Old Howling Bastard and is produced by Blue Point Brewing. The beer is around 10% ABV, and interestingly, quite bitter, at around 70 IBU (International Bittering Units). The name of the ale is certainly befitting for a whisky that pays homage to an area associated with legends, none more infamous than the “Jersey Devil” (the Pine Barrens will also be familiar to any fans of the Sopranos). The whisky itself is aged in American “petite” charred white oak casks, for “about a year”. The smaller cask should no doubt create conditions ideal for faster maturation of the spirit. The whisky itself is distinctively piney and slightly bittersweet, with oak, biscuits and treacle. This spirit is bottled at 47.5% ABV, giving the flavours as lot of power and resonance. Certainly not a traditional single malt, but a highly interesting whisky that fans of American distilling will want to try.
