Something a little different here, a port cask aged gin!
The history of port wine is closely tied to England, where it was first imported in 1703, during a time when French wines were unavailable. The sweet, fortified wine quickly became extremely popular – a legacy that can be seen today with the English names of many port brands (such as Graham’s or Dow).
As such, it is fitting then that this gin has been made with English grain spirit, botanicals inspired by Portugal and of course, former port casks.
The gin is aged for 4 months, producing a lightly coloured spirit with flavours of red berries, lemon, grapefruit, lime, vanilla and bittersweet juniper. Highly enjoyable served over ice with a wedge of pink grapefruit.
The bottle recalls traditional Port wine bottles, whilst the name “Nao” comes from the Portuguese word for Carrack, a type of ship that was used at the time when port wine was first imported to England.
