The Mossburn whisky company are the people behind the Torabhaig distillery on Skye, and are also constructing two new distilleries in the Border town of Jedburgh.

Having had some success with their Vintage Cask range, Mossburn have released this blended malt as part of their Signature Cask series, which offers a taste of Scotland’s whisky producing regions. The series makes use of specially designed “Mossburn Casks”, created to highlight particular features of the whisky.

This offering is a blended malt from the Speyside region, which has been aged refill American oak casks, before a finishing period in Oloroso sherry butts which featured heavily charred virgin American oak tops.

The result is a richly flavoured whisky, replete with classic Speyside flavours of warm malt, orchard fruit and hay, but also featuring intense, spicy and fruity sherry flavours and powerful, bright vanilla notes from the Virgin oak heads. The char on these barrel tops has also added a delicate, fragrant wood smoke to the whisky.

Bottled at 46% ABV and without either chill filtration or colouring, this is a well crafted dram.
