An extremely high quality mezcal, produced by Don Abel Lopez in Santiago Matatlán.
Montelobos was founded by Ivan Saldana, an Agave specialist and biochemist.
This mezcal is made entirely with 100% Espadin agave, sourced from the Lopez family’s 16 hectares of land. The agave is roasted in traditional fire pits using palm leaves and earth to cover. The roasted agave continues to be crushed by mule, and the mash is fermented for up to seven days in pine vats. The spirit is double distilled in copper stills.
Saldana believes that there are four aspects to Mezcal’s flavour – the taste of roasted agave, the taste of green agave, smoke and the flavours produced in fermentation (which could be termed ‘funk’). All four aspects are on show with this bottling.
This Mezcal opens with smoked vegetal notes, alongside a little green chili, apple and pear, agave honey, succulent green agave, white pepper, a beer-like funk, and a faint touch of mineralic flint.
Totally unaged, this bottling emphasises the quality of the agave first and foremost.
Bottled in small batches at 43.2% ABV, this was awarded a gold medal at the 2019 Tequila and Mezcal Masters, organized by The Spirits Business.
