Here at Fine Drams we have made no secret of our appreciation for the delights of Rhum Agricole. Yet, we continue to uncover brands and companies we hadn’t previously encountered, each with their own surprising take on this classic rum variety. Mangoustan Carte Grise appears to be a revival of a brand that existed in the 1900s, imported and produced by Simon Fréres (who also used to import Gordon’s Gin into Paris). The name of this rum refers to the “Grey Card” label of the rum. The label also proclaims that the spirit was made in the “premier distilleries of the French Antilles”, likely Martinique. It is said that this rum is reproduced based upon a recipe created for Napoléon Bonaparte. The final product itself is rich and decadent, with a dried fruit flavour alongside some fresh cane grassiness and a little tobacco smoke. An interesting and intriguing rum, well worth a try.
