One of the must-have liqueurs for any bar, Luxardo Maraschino is a far cry from the standard cherry liqueur.
Maraca cherries (sour Morello cherries native to the Dalmatia region of Croatia) are grown especially in Luxardo’s cherry orchard, provide the core flavour for this bottling. This Maraschino is made to a recipe dating back to 1821.
The cherries are infused in Larchwood vats, before being distilled in small copper pot stills. The liqueur is aged for two years in Finnish ashwood vats before sugar and water is added. The product is then packaged in the famous straw-encased bottles (this was originally a means of preventing breakage during shipping).
The result is a remarkably earthy and spicy cherry liqueur, with a peppery alcohol note, and powerful, punguent cherry flavours, dark chocolate, citrus rind and vanilla.
Certainly the best known, if not the best, version of this liqueur, Luxardo Maraschino is a vital ingredient in myriad different cocktails, such as the Improved Whiskey Cocktail and the Last Word.
