Another excellent blended whisky that forms part of Loch Lomond’s resurgence and rebranding. Loch Lomond is a distillery with an extremely high, and variety output: able to produce both grain and malt whiskies of several different styles at their distillery on the banks of one of Scotland’s most famous Lochs. This bottle, the “Signature” is created using Loch Lomond’s 100 cask solera system: more commonly seen in sherry and rum production. This system uses both recharred American oak ex-bourbon barrels, and former Oloroso Sherry casks. This system sees barrels bottled a little at a time, and as this occurs, spirit from the next oldest cask replaces the spirit bottled. This means that there is an excellent balance between young and old whiskies in the cask, and that a fabulous consistency of quality is achieved, whilst the solera continues to grow in complexity. This is an intense and delicious blended whisky, which offers up lovely harmonious notes of sweet vanilla, dried fruit, oak char and toffee on the nose. This grows into a thick and decadent palate, with flavours of intense dried fruit, rich vanilla custard and sweet cereal. The finish is short and sweet, with a lingering sherry quality. This whisky picked up a bronze medal in the 2016 San Francisco Spirits Competition, and a Silver in the 2015 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition.
