A rather extraordinary Akvavit from Norwegian producer Linie.
This bottling is made with a base of potato spirit, and flavoured with the caraway herb.
In a unique twist, this spirit is aged at sea in old sherry casks, crossing the equator twice, and travelling to Australia, America, Singapore and Japan on its journey. The rolling of the waves, and the change in climate on the journey, ensures that the spirit interacts fully with the wood of the cask. Some critics have doubted whether or not this journey actually happens, and in response Linie have produced a live-stream of their barrels at sea, along with a sped-up version of the video.
The spirit itself offers a deep, herbal flavour with notes of oak, dried fruit, liquorice, fennel, sherry, chopped herbs, lemon rind, spice, aniseed, pepper, and apples.
A high quality after dinner Akvavit, this bottling also works well as an addition to the traditional Scandinavian winter drink, Gløgg (a kind of mulled wine).
