A delectable Spanish gin from Destilierias MG, a small family run distillery found in Vilanova. Vilanova is a little fishing village a short distance from Barcelona. The distillery was first founded in 1835, and spent the first century of its operation producing medicines and syrups.
It is this medicinal history that is recalled by the bottle of Le Tribute, which has a distinctly old-school apothecary feel. This is not the first gin that the distillery has produced: Gin MG was launched in 1940, and is one of the best selling gins in Spain to this day. Destilierias MG are also the folk behind the super popular and fashionable Gin Mare.
Le Tribute was created as a tribute to the pioneers and heritage of the gin industry. Destilierias MG wanted to be adventurous in creating this gin, and so it proves with the production, which is extremely complex.
Seven distillations are undertaken: firstly juniper, then lime, then kumquat, followed by a fourth distillation of citrus (lemon, pink grapefruit and green grapefruit), fifth is tangerine, sixth cardamom, additional lemons, bitter and sweet oranges, and finally a distillation of lemongrass. 6 of these distillations occur using a neutral wheat spirit, but the final is distilled with water to maintain the freshness and delicacy of the lemongrass. The different distillates are then blended and diluted to a strength of 43% ABV.
The final result is a deeply citrusy gin, with notes of fleshy orange, tangerine and grapefruit, alongside lime and lemon zests. A grassy, herbal background is provided by the lemongrass and juniper, with some gentle spice flavours of cardamom.
A perfect example of a modern, citrus-forward gin, enjoy this with a good quality tonic and a wedge of pink grapefruit.
