Pronounced “etch-ee-seh-rah”, the name of this rum translates to “enchantress”, certainly an apt name for a spirit as delicious and alluring is this one. The rum is produced in Colombia by the Riascos family, who have been creating excellent rum for three generations. Indeed, they are the only privately-owned company in Colombia, with the others all owned by the state. The spirit is produced using sugar cane molasses, and distilled in a continuous column still. This golden rum has been aged in former Bourbon American Oak casks for between 12 and 21 years in the tropical microclimate of Barranquilla, on Colombia’s Pacific coast.
The company uses a solera system, commonly seen in brandy and sherry production, which consists of a collection of barrels, with spirit being drawn from the oldest. Every time a cask is tapped for bottling (typically only drawing a third at a time), the next oldest cask is used to refill the elder, with this cask then filled from the next oldest, and so on. This ensures a great consistency of age and quality across bottlings. La Hechicera is a delicious rum, rich in spiced wood, tobacco smoke and dark chocolate flavours. With its striking bottle featuring a bright blue badge, this is a rum that impresses in both flavour and looks.
